Sir,

I submit the following report and statements in

connection with the shelling and seizure of the Customs

Cruiser "CHAHSING" by a Japanese destroyer at DEEP BAY on

the 11th December, 1937.

1.

The "CHAHSING" is 250 tons, her armament being

one 3 pounder gun, 3 Lewis guns and side arms.

2.

Her arew consists of one European Captain,

one European Engineer, 3 artificers, 20 ratings and 5 cabin

hands.

3.

Since the hostilities commenced the "CHAHSING"

has been anchored at Kowloon Bay.

On the 11th December, 1937, Captain COOK receiveč instructions to proceed into DEEP BAY keeping in British Waters, and to wait for further instructions with a view to landing

a party of men at SHUM CHUN Customs Station.

At 12 noon on the same date, the cruiser sailed

from Kowloon Bay via CAP SHUI MUN with the mentioned men on

board.

6.

At 14.20 hours when the ship was roughly about half a mile to the north of YUNG LUNG WAN (British Territory)

at the entrance to DEEP BAY, she sighted a Japanese destroyer

belonging to the 23rd or 25th flotilla, at a distance 1.3

miles from S. W. Point (CHAK WAN) in Chinese Waters, when fire

was opened by the destroyer on the cruiser.

7.

At 14.22 hours the engines of the cruiser

were stopped and the cruiser swung stern into the direction

of the destroyer.
